About Dervla Murphy
Born in Dublin in 1931, Dervla Murphy has become one of the greatest 20th Century travellers and adventurers - and it wouldn't be too far off the mark to describe her as one of the last of the true explorers. Her travels on bike, foot, and pack animal have taken her through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Americas and Europe, and her quirky, blunt and inspirational accounts have made her a hero to many.
As well as her travel writing, Dervla Murphy is known for her insightful and determined writings and views on social issues as diverse as race relations in the UK, nuclear power and the Irish 'Troubles'. Her meticulous research and carefully ajudged views have made her one of today's most valuable social commentators. Describing herself as 'fearless' but never 'brave', media shy Dervla Murphy celebrated her 80th birthday in 2011. In February 2013 her latest book was released by Eland Books - 'A Month by the Sea - Encounters in Gaza' is the first of two books on Israel and Palestine, and Dervla is currently working on the second. Her childhood hometown of Lismore, County Waterford, remains close to her heart, and it is from her modest home there that she continues to write and inspire into her ninth decade. |
